Bolex goes digital with the D16 Cinema Camera

Bolex goes digital with the D16 Cinema Camera

There was a time, not all that long ago, when most independent film-makers shot their projects on relatively-inexpensive 16mm film – it wasn't as pricey as 35mm, but was definitely a step up from Super 8. The cameras shooting that film were quite often made by the venerable Swiss manufacturer, Bolex. Today, in the age of digital video, film-makers wanting to take a step up from consumer-grade camcorders are looking at some pretty expensive gear. LA-based entrepreneurs Joe Rubinstein and Elle Schneider are trying to change that, with the introduction of their Digital Bolex D16 Cinema Camera.

Introducing the C-Box distribution amplifier

Introducing the C-Box distribution amplifier

Real world video shooting, when professionals are involved, means you have multiple people operating the camera and making decisions on set. They all need to see the camera signal, and since most cameras output a single HD-SDI output, the only way to provide signal to multiple viewers is with an HD-SDI video distribution amplifier.

Sony HRX-NX3 WiFi Enabled Professional Video Cameras is Here

You Know You Want One: Sony HRX-NX3 WiFi Enabled Professional Video Cameras is Here

Consumer camcorders aren't the only devices that are being updated with amazing new features, professional video cameras are getting the hi-tech upgrade as well. It seems there's a daily dose of chip sensor and resolution upgrades for professional video cameras, but some of the improvements desired by videographers are functional improvements. Sony's offering of professional video cameras is known to have innovative technology incorporated into every release, some are successful while some pass by to the side. Yesterday, Sony announced the release of the Sony HXR-NX3 professional camcorder.

Phantom Flex4K records fire at 1000 FPS, 4K resolution

Phantom Flex4K records fire at 1000 FPS, 4K resolution

The Phantom Flex4K camera can shoot at up to 4096x2304 resolution using its Super 35mm-sized sensor, and can capture Ultra HD 4096x2160 video at up to 1,000 frames per second. Shooting at that resolution and quality consumes around 16GB of storage a second, so despite the 1TB and 2TB removable storage system that the Flex4K uses, every shot had to be meticulously planned; with an internal buffer of 32GB, each shot could be no longer than 2.2 seconds in length.

The Digital Bolex D16 Brings Movie Magic Back: A Digital Camera for Film Lovers

The Digital Bolex D16 Brings Movie Magic Back: A Digital Camera for Film Lovers

The vintage look of many past home movies and independent films can be traced back to the Bolex camera. Bolex was the maker of many 16mm and Super 16mm film cameras. The Bolex camera of the past was noted for its spring-loaded motor and its rotating three lens turret.

Many older filmmakers have fond memories of the Bolex camera and the accessibility it granted them to the world of filmmaking. The Bolex camera is now reborn for the digital generation of filmmakers. In 2012, a Kickstarter campaign was launched to fund the Digital Bolex D16. That campaign was successful and individuals who ordered a Bolex camera through the campaign should be getting one soon. This also means that the Digital Bolex D16 should be available on the market in the near future.

The 6 best DSLR cameras for shooting videos

The 6 best DSLR cameras for shooting videos

Long ago, there was once a time when a camera was supposed to take just photos, but that all changed when Canon introduced video into their DSLRs, starting with the 5D MarkII. It wasn't that Canon dropped basic video functionality into the camera, they put something in there that was borderline magical, making the 5D a favourite among many big name Hollywood production houses. That was 2008 and now, five years later, video has become a standard feature in DSLRs. Thanks to how widespread video has become, and how cheap DSLRs are compared to professional video cameras, film making has become an incredibly wide-spread phenomenon. We've checked out the DSLRs available in the market, and for those who are looking for a camera that can do great video, we've got a few options for you right here.

Should DSLR video shooters move to the Blackmagic Cinema Camera? Review!

Should DSLR video shooters move to the Blackmagic Cinema Camera? Review!

The original Blackmagic Cinema Camera is not new and since its launch Blackmagic introduced new models, but the 2.5K version is still a popular choice. What's more only a few months ago the camera got a lot cheaper, so this might be a good moment to get one. Jaron Schneider of Fstoppers did a great and indeep review of the camera and he also raises the question if DSLR video shooters could easily move to the BMCC. If you want to move from a Canon 5D Mark III, 60D and 70D, a Panasonic GH2 or any other DSLR over to a Blackmagic, you probably wonder if such a transition would be easy and worth it. Generally moving to the Blackmagic Cinema Camera should be a good choice, but Jaron notes that you should take into consideration the fact, that Blackmagic's camera is a bit heavy and offers terrible ergonomics if you compare it to most DSLRs. On the other hand the build quality is, as expected, solid and reliable.

Two New Full Frame Cameras in 2014?

Two New Full Frame Cameras in 2014..?

Two new full frame cameras coming? We see talk of two new full frame cameras coming in 2014 with availability in the early part of 2015. It's mentioned that the EOS 5D Mark III would move up the spec ladder once again, but wouldn't be the camera for "total image quality". That would be saved for studio based EOS-1 body that is coming next year.

There is no chance of an EOS-3D according to this report. Although medium format is "still an option". This information apparently comes from a higher end dealer presentation that occurred in Japan.

Research and Markets: 2012-2013 Broadcast/Pro Video Cameras Report

Research and Markets: 2012-2013 Broadcast/Pro Video Cameras Report

Cameras have seen a huge metamorphosis from the transition of film to video to digital. There are experts now who say the word video should not be associated with the word camera. Cameras can safely be grouped into categories of large single sensor digital cinema cameras or HD television cameras and 3D camcorders.

Examples of the large single sensor variety include the ARRI Alexa; RED One, Epic and Scarlet; Canon C300; Sony F65 and Panasonic AF100. HD television cameras would include the Panasonic HPX3700, Sony XDcams, and EX3 products. Hybridization has been the norm in the camera sector, with technological changes occurring at a phenomenal rate as more facilities adopt 3D technologies and acquisition platforms.

Exclusive review - Sony RX10

Exclusive review - Sony RX10

Super 8 and Super 16 movie cameras took a free-roaming Henri-Cartier Bresson style to documentary filmmaking and "run & gun" for the first time (as early as the 1960′s). Cadid footage of JFK on the election trail. French New Wave cinema in the 80′s. The run & gun simplicity of Bolex Super 16mm cameras is timeless.

The Sony RX10 on paper is perfectly equipped to be a cinematic run & gun camera. The lens for example: a stunning Zeiss 8.5-73mm F2.8 (constant aperture) zoom, would be worth $10,000 on a 16mm cine camera.

But does the camera as a whole deliver a cinematic image?

Phillip Bloom, the Sony FS700, and 4k Video

Phillip Bloom, the Sony FS700, and 4k Video

One of the best ways to learn any craft is to observe the masters. Filmmaker Philip Bloom is a master of videography. He takes the latest technological advances in camera gear and runs them through the test of an artist's eye.

Vivid imagery of real life scenarios is a trademark of Philip Bloom and he has shown his mastery again through his latest work with the Sony FS700. The Sony FS700 has a mixed reputation amongst videographers, the camera is awkward to use but is able to shoot incredibly rich footage at high frame rates. One of the knocks against the Sony FS700 was its previous lack of 4k video, a feature that was toted as coming soon. The day has arrived and the Sony FS700 is now capable of shooting 4k video.

Redrock Micro One Man Crew Motorized Slider

Redrock Micro One Man Crew Motorized Slider

Redrock Micro's One Man Crew is now out and for sure it is an interesting product. According to the company it is the world's only motorized parabolic motion system. Its drive guides your camera on precision-curved track at any speed you choose while keeping your subject stationary in frame. Fstoppers did a very nice and informative video review of the device and guess what - indeed, it is amazing! The product has many pros according to the website - it is light, compact and easy to carry and setup. What is also good is that it provides a good bit of distance (46″) for the camera to travel. It is also super intuitive to use. The slider offers laser calibration and it is activated with the push of one button, there's also a quick mounting tilt head which connects to your camera to the movement sled. Of course nothing is perfect and for some the price can be a bit too high ($1495), what's more the tested unit did not move the camera very quickly, at least at first.

video interview with Panasonic's manager on the future of 4K

If you are interested in 4K cameras and displays, here's a video that was recorded at InterBEE 2013. In this interview you will see Dan Chung of The News Shooter and Neil Noriaki Ugo from Panasonic. As you must be aware Panasonic, as well as many other important camera producers, believes that 4K (and beyond) is the future of the industry and if you are a pro shooter you will be pleased to find out that a new 4K Varicam should make a working appearance at next year's NAB. The website reminds that at last year's show the company presented a mock-up of a modular camera that was going to be equipped with a 4K Super 35mm sensor recording in AVC Ultra at 4:4:4. Then Panasonic also unveiled that the camera should be able to shoot 120fps.

The Sky Will Soon Be Filled With Journalism Drones

New York Magazine - Welcome to Alec Baldwin's worst nightmare. While the military's use of drones is already the subject of heated debate, The New York Times has a preview of the next drone controversy: their use in news gathering. Several media outlets, including CNN, the Associated Press and News Corporation, are already using the devices in situations where a helicopter would be too costly or disruptive. For the most part, news organizations are using drones for good, or at least innocuous purposes, such as providing overhead shots of the devastation in the Philippines, filming wildlife documentaries, and sports coverage. However, as the technology improves and becomes more affordable, drones used in journalism are generating new privacy concerns, as they could be used to track and photograph anyone.

Carbon Fiber Matte Box for DSLR and Video Cameras by ClearView

Carbon Fiber Matte Box for DSLR and Video Cameras by ClearView

When shooting video with a DSLR, if you've ever wondered why your videos seem to be washed out – with less contrast and deep color than your still images, you may be suffering from unwanted light hitting the front element of your lens. Video's slower shutter speeds gives your camera's sensor more time to accumulate these stray light effects.

Canon EOS 70D: Recording HD Video Has Never Been So Great or Easy [REVEIW]

Once upon a time, DSLRs were primarily used just for taking photos. That's still the case, but increasingly, we're seeing a lot of amateur filmmakers use DSLRs to shoot incredible movies that — with good lenses, proper lighting and solid post-production — have fooled us into thinking they were made by large production companies.

So, you've got the camera (or just about to buy it) and you realise that you'll have to flex the credit card a bit more because you are going to need a whole load of kit to go with it.

Obviously, it depends upon your budget and what you'll be shooting, but you'll probably need a tripod to keep the camera steady, one or two microphones and a way of connecting them to the camera, batteries, battery charger, lights, filters and something to carry them all around in.

This is our guide to the accessories you're most likely to need.

Sony PMW-400 ReviewsTop-Teks

Having never been a hugely popular camera the PMW-350 is finally to be replaced with an up-graded unit, initially announced at NAB in April the new PMW-400 should start shipping around IBC in September.
So is it a better camera than the 350, in a nut shell yes. The first thing I looked at was the view finder, the low res VGA unit that came as standard with the 350 was always a bone of contention with cameramen, fortunately Sony have listened and it has been replaced with a ¼ res HD (960 h x 540 v) unit which is a huge improvement giving better contrast and greater view angles.

New Sony A7 and A7R have focus magnification and adjustable controls while filming

When you shoot on DSLRs and CSCs, you give up many of the basic camera features professional shooters require – internal ND's, manual audio, focus & aperture controls, etc. In this News Shooter article, Sony has made their new A7 and A7r mirrorless cameras harder for pros to resist. Putting the question of image quality aside, a lot of those pro gotta-haves are there – including the much-appreciated ability to magnify while shooting to get those tack-sharp HD images we've all grown to love.

Canon EOS 70D

Canon EOS 70D

The Canon EOS 70D ($1,199 direct, body only) is the first traditional D-SLR we've seen with an on-chip phase detect autofocus system that doesn't have to hand off to contrast detection in order to confirm focus. That gives it the ability to deliver quick, smooth autofocus when recording video, but there's still some room for improvement in dim lighting. The 20-megapixel camera is a solid option for Canon shooters looking to move up from a Rebel body, but don't want to go full-frame. Despite its video prowess, it doesn't manage to oust our Editors' Choice for midrange D-SLRs, the Nikon D7100. The Nikon may not focus as quickly in Live View mode as the Canon, but we liked it slightly better overall.

Panasonic GH4 coming next year? Rumored specs include 10bit 4:2:2 and 4K!

The Panasonic GH2 was an amazing DSLR for video shooting, but while its successor, the GH3, is also very nice, it faces a much stronger competition, also from cameras allowing you to shoot in UHD resolutions. But it seems that Panasonic did its homework as according to rumors the GH4 is coming and it should support 10bit 4:2:2 and 4K video! 43 Rumors also reports that Panasonic plans to release a high-end camera in Spring - a camera that will offer the best specs and will compete against the Canon EOS C300 but for 1/5 of the price! Sounds crazy, but let's not forget that this is just a rumor.

Nikon D5300 video features : For people who want to take their creative vision to video, the Nikon D5300 D-Movie function records smooth, finely detailed Full HD video at frame rates up to 50p/60p. Offering the kind of superior performance and sharp focus that's critical for HD video, the Nikon D5300 digital SLR camera begins recording with a simple press of its dedicated movie button. Continuous Live View autofocus keeps subjects sharp, even when the action is fast, and you can relax and let the Nikon camera keep track of your subject with subject-tracking autofocus face-priority AF. Thanks to the D5300's built-in stereo microphone and compatibility with Nikon's ME-1 stereo microphone, it's easy to capture footage with amazing sound.

Canon 70D DSLR Video Review

I've really enjoyed working with the Canon 70D over the past several weeks. Between the auto focus, audio displays, touch screen and great camera body I think this one is a real winner. By far my favorite DSLR for video. Here is my full review of the 70D:

Sony RX10 – A bridge camera with exciting video features

Sony RX10 – A bridge camera with exciting video features

Another Sony camera release, this time it's in the form of a bridge camera - The Sony RX10. You may ask why a camera of this sort receives any form of acknowledgement from a filmmaking blog – a fixed lens 1″ stills camera. But it holds some very interesting features that not only looking exciting for video but offer groundbreaking technology for any sort of video-able stills camera.

How Safe Is Drone Filmmaking?

An interesting article on the uses of drones and filming.

How Safe Is Drone Filmmaking?

Local New York news recently featured the story of an unmanned aerial vehicle (a UAV or drone) with a camera attached to it that crashed to the ground near Grand Central Station, in the middle of a busy part of midtown.

The drone's pilot, David Zablidowsky, was charged with a Class A misdemeanor for reckless endangerment. As the local ABC affiliate reported, "The FAA has yet to come up with concrete rules for unmanned aircraft systems, known as UAS or drones, but has said that 'UAS operations are currently not authorized in class b airspace which exists over major urban areas.'"

One for the sound guys and gals...

Spiral Symmetry, Superior Sound: Recording with K-Tek's Nautilus Mic Suspension Mount | www.creativeplanetnetwork.com

As a videographer specializing in wildlife photography, I often shoot alone. It's up to me to shoot clean audio, not a boom operator or a sound person. This means I usually handle the mic'ing myself, mostly with the mic mounted on or very near the camera. Mounting the microphone off-camera is the best way to go, but that's really only feasible when you're shooting in a fairly stationary position. When I'm using the mic on camera (which is most of the time), I need some kind of shock mount to isolate vibration and handling noise.

Sony RX10: A video journalists delight?

Sony RX10: A video journalists delight?

The RX10 in video configuration – proof that all news shooters need a floppy hat.

Most of the web chatter yesterday was about Sony's new A7 and A7R full-frame cameras. These are small technological marvels but for me it may well be the RX10, launched at the same time, that is of more interest to video journalists.
